Coffee is found in Ethiopia and started to be consumed by boiling the seed into the water and drinking it. Because of its ‘magical’ effects, it was spread very fast to the Arabian Peninsula. On 14th century with a new discovery it is started to be consumed with roasting it on fire and boiling it after smashing the seeds. Yemen was the first place that coffee was drunk with processing. The arrival of coffee from the Arabian Peninsula to the European continent took place in 16th century by a Yemeni governor by carrying this delicious and delightful beverage to Istanbul. Coffee has become quickly a prestigious beverage in Istanbul and finally was discovered by Venetian merchants, while they were visiting Istanbul. Thus the Europe met the coffee at 1615! It reached to Paris in 1643 and to London in 1651.
While history shows that Arabs and the Turks are the ones who brought it to the European continent, Italians are the ones who turned the coffee culture into an art.
Coffee is a big part of the daily life in Italy and I am pretty sure that the life cannot go on without that. Since it’s delicious, we all are ok with this! But the deal is how to choose it, because there are a damn lot! Here is a guide for you to decide how to choose your coffee which fits perfect for you!
I am going to write about 12 types of coffees, however there are way more than this amount. I am going to mention the most popular & common Italian coffee types for you!
1.) Espresso: This is the main & typical coffee in Italy and it is also the base of almost all the other kinds. If you order as ‘un caffè’, you will be served an espresso. a small cup of a strong coffee. (20-25ml)
2.) Caffè doppio: Two portions of espresso served in a small cup. (40-50ml)
3.) Caffè lungo: The same amount of espresso, but diluted by a small amount of water. (30-40 ml)
4.) Caffè ristretto: A more concentrated version of espresso. (less than 20 ml)
5.) Caffè macchiato: An espresso with a cold or hot drop of milk. You can recognize the difference between macchiato and espresso, from the thin layer of foam on the surface. (25ml)
6.) Caffè americano: An espresso diluted by water but different from the lungo because the water is added after the brewing process. (almost 80 ml)
7.) Cappuccino: An espresso with the same amount of milk and foam on the top, depending on the demand a powder cacao on the foam. It is also called cappuccio, especially in southern Italy. And Italians don’t consume it after the noon.
8.) Caffè latte: An espresso with 175-225 ml milk in it. It is always served in a glass cup, in order to let you see the layers of the coffee, milk and the foam. You can ask the cols version of it for summer.
9.) Latte macchiato: It is served in a tall glass cup, a part of the cream of the milk (%40) and a part of liquid milk (%60) and finally a shot of espresso is poured in it.
10.) Mocaccino: The cream of the milk and foamed milk with a shot of espresso and chocolate poured in it. Again served in a glass cup for the layers of coffee, chocolate and the foam.
11.) Marocchino: It is again served with a glass cup, inside rubbed with liquid chocolate, pouring a shot of espresso in it and a bit of cocoa powder on the espresso. Then the creamed milk is poured in the glass, lastly a liquid chocolate on top to decorate it.
12.) Shakerato: it is a mocha shaked hard with ice and sugar, served in a martini glass.
