How to say a few words in Italian?

When abroad I personally love to say a few basic words in the language of the country; especially the polite ones. So I’ll teach you here the basics.

Well to speak Italian, it is not hard: you have to speak with your hands!  I might exagerate a little but you will notice it is not just a cliché: it does exist lots of different gestures with meanings! But for this, I let you have your own experience….

You all know at least one word in Italian: Ciao.
It can either be used when you meet a friend or to say to him goodbye.

Here is a list of the other useful ones:

Goodmorning /goodday= Buongiorno
Goodbye= arrivederci
Thank you (very much) = grazie (mille)

Please= Prego

Sorry= Scusi (if you’re speaking to a young or a friend)/ Scusa otherwise

For those who like to take risks, you can try :

– at the restaurant :   “Can I/we have the bill?”= “Posso/possiamo avere il conto?”

– “Where can I buy /find …. ”  = “Dov’è posso comprare/trovare…? “

–          “Where are the toilets? “ = “Dov’è il bagno?”

–          “How do we go to…. ?” = “ Come si puo fare per raggiungere… ?”

Hope it will help you !

Don’t hesitate and ask other words by writing a comment 😉

Clarisse- I’m a 23 year-old Parisian who studies in a Business School in France. After a semester in Milan as an exchange student, I decided to work there because I loved living there. I now know Milan very well, as I love just wandering in the streets and discovering new things. It is a very dynamic city and there are a lot of places which deserved to be seen. That’s why I wanted to share my experience with you. Also because I love traveling and when I’m in a city abroad I always wonder where would go the locals. So I'll try and advise you the bests spots to be ! What else you might want to know about me? Well, I love fashion and I’m quite gourmet so I’ll recommend you fine restaurants and bars to do the famous aperitivo and to eat the Italian specialties. As I like doing lots of different activities, I try and be informed about what's new so I'll do my best to keep you updated. 😉 Hope you'll find everything you need and have fun!
