Colonne di San Lorenzo is a big square in front of the church of San Lorenzo (between the Duomo and Navigli) with the original Roman columns that date from the 4th Century. It now serves as a place where young students gather to drink and smoke weed.

Situated in the center and most alternative / hip part of the city and close to tons of aperitivo bars, it’s for many milanese students the perfect place to start an evening. Especially in the weekends it serves as a meeting place after dinner, to gather from different parts of town, get a drink and take a cab to the clubs.

In the winter it’s too cold to sit outside on the square itself but luckily there are a lot of nice bars surrounding it to go to. In summer it’s a different story: the square is filled with people playing on their guitars, rolling a joint and hanging out, every day of the week. There are a few bars around the square that are more like “stands” where you can get a drink in a plastic cup to take away for a very small price. Of course it won’t be the best cocktail you’ve ever tasted so if you want you can spend a bit more and go to for example Farinami or Exploit.
